Lighten up: Reduce your carbon footprint and workplace costs – Microsoft Office Online

In honor of Earth Day (I think every day should be celebrated as Earth Day) here are some tips from the Microsoft Community on Going Green. I am still working on that “paperless” thing!

Readers and Scanners

GoToWebinar : Webinars & Web Events Made Easy. Award-Winning Web Casting & Online Seminar Hosting Software

My colleague and friend Steve Holland did this demo using SoftChalk. He made some interesting points on designing content for eLearning (but it really goes for printed reports and websites, too) “Readers” and “Scanners.” He showed how the newspaper has been doing this for years, and how we should keep that in mind when we are designing things we want people to read.

I asked if there was some sort of assessment that we could give students regarding whether they were readers or scanners. That is under investigation. Maybe we can come up with a tool or even a game for that!

If you have not already tried Softchalk, it is a great tool to help you re-purpose content into a meaningful way for eLearning. It is very easy to use, has great support, and a free download to try it at www.softchalk.com

Script Me!

This seems to be a very useful site; not only for the scripts you can have generated, but for the knowledge you can gain from looking at the scripts it generates! This was written by Ann Enigma and is released under creative commons license. You may wish to donate to the site to help with hosting costs.

Building in a Holodeck — Project Progress

Filed Under Boise State Class, Second Life | Leave a Comment

I found a great YouTube video from Inside this World about their Holodeck.  That looks pretty neat for developing my project –  I will need to purchase the Production model for this.  As I was experimenting with the Demo Holodeck located in a skybox above our virtual campus, I inadvertently changed the main teleport for the entire island!  Whoooopppppssss!!

My project is taking shape as I am gathering more tools and more talents.  I am focusing on developing an immersive learning environment to help students learn the OSI model.  The aspects I hope to enhance include:

General knowledge of what happens at each layer
Putting components in the correct layer
Cabling — 568A/B standards, types of cables
Troubleshooting – why do I need to learn this stuff?
Relationship between the OSI Model and the TCP/IP Model

This is what I have done so far:

Got a Demo Holodeck and put it in a skybox
Researched other types of Holodecks, and realize I probably need to build my own or buy the Productional
I purchased some educational tools, one of which is the Big Quiz Rezzer from Eloise Pasteur.  With this tool, I was able to upload some PowerPoint slides for the Quiz, but they took so long to load. Last night my fellow classmates suggested there was a script that allowed this to load better – a sequence thing.  I need to find out more about that.

Here are things that I am currently looking for to complete my project:
1.  Script — or solution to solve the rezzing problem on my PowerPoint slides
2.  Tracker box — we looked at these last week in class, I just need to see if what I got works for my needs
3.  Comment box — noticed they had them in the ICT Library, need to see if they are available for purchase or free at the library or elsewhere
4.  Some sort of matching game
5.  Some sort of sequencing game
6.  Can you have learners move objects into spaces/places and determine if the correct objects are moved there?  How?
7.  Can you embed Flash into SL somehow (I am thinking not, but need to figure that out – I can always go out to the web for some type of Flash interaction)
8.  Get streaming video to work on our island.
9.  How do you get things to appear in the right-click menu?  Buy? Teleport? Ride? Enter/Go Inside?
10.  How do you directly click on an object and teleport without using the right-click menu — I’m sure it is a script just need to check it out.

Check out the LSL Wiki for simple scripts.  Also check out the web script generator for help.

Getting to Know Your Routing Table

Subnetting, supernetting, Level 1, 2, parent, child…what does it all mean?

Here are a couple of resources from Rick Graziani about just that!

Administrative Distance

Filed Under Networking | Leave a Comment

I like to think of administrative distance as the “closeness” or “trustworthiness” measure.

The lower the value of administrative distance, means the more trustworthy.

With 0 — being directly connected, 1 — being a static route.

For the CCNA exam, it might be a good idea to be familiar with the default values for the administrative distances for each routing protocol.

The administrative distance can be found on the routing table from the show ip route command.

Changing the Configuration Register from ROMMON

Filed Under Networking | Leave a Comment

Occassionally, I see the rommon 1> prompt when I log into one of our lab routers.  Usually, that means that the configuration register is set to boot from rommon.  So…to change that type:

 rommon 1 >confreg 0×2102
In order for that to take effect, power-cycle the router.
