{"id":82,"date":"2008-02-09T07:04:09","date_gmt":"2008-02-09T13:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/?p=82"},"modified":"2008-02-09T07:18:46","modified_gmt":"2008-02-09T13:18:46","slug":"blooming-rose-x-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/blooming-rose-x-100\/","title":{"rendered":"Blooming Rose X 100"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At our Girl Scout Winter Weekend, we rotated 100 girls through five different stations (25 minutes each with 5 minutes to travel in between stations) on the topic of \u201cScience is Fun!\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>My station was \u201cScience that Cooks.\u201d<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We made the Blooming Rose with the recipe that follows:<\/p>\n<p>Discuss safety issues.\u00a0 (ex.\u00a0 hot burner, cleanliness, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you wash\/sanitize your hands before handling food.<\/p>\n<p>In a heat-resistant bowl, measure 1\/3c marshmallows.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Measure \u00bcc applesauce and 1t redhots and heat until applesauce is very hot (enough to melt the marshmallows).<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Applesauce will turn pink.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Spoon the \u00bc c applesauce over the marshmallows.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Let set to allow marshmallows to melt up into pink applesauce and form the blooming rose.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Let cool a bit before eating.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The redhots provide not only color, but a cinnamon flavor.<\/p>\n<p>I purchased the following quantities to accommodate 100 participants:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">10 bags mini marshmallows<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">5 jars of applesauce<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">100 heat-resistant bowls<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">100 plastic spoons<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Napkins<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\">Besides the above, also bring:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Heat source (crockpot, electric skillet, campstove, firewood, burner, etc)<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Thermometer (optional)<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">2 pans<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Large bowl for marshmallows<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Measuring cups and spoons (1t, 1\/4c, 1\/3c)<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Trash bags<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Recycle bin for plastic silverware<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Dishclothes and towels for clean up.<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You can do this at a campfire, with a campstove, or other heat source.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We used a portable, double-burner stove.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>To move the girls through the stations in 25 minutes, we started with hot applesauce in one pan and let them measure their serving into the other pan along with the red hots.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The bowls, spoons, and napkins were at the tables.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>We had a marshmallow station, and a cooking station.<\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\" style=\"margin-top: 0in\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Wash\/sanitize hands.\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Measure 1\/3c marshmallows into bowl.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Return bowl to your table.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Come to cooking station and measure \u00bc c applesauce and 1t redhots into pan.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Return to the table to get your bowl of marshmallows.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Come back to the cooking station to get your pink applesauce.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Wait and Watch to see your blooming rose.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Eat when cooled.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; tab-stops: list .5in\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Clean up. Throw bowl away and recycle plastic fork.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Along the way\u2026talk about the Science that is happening (ex.
