{"id":154,"date":"2008-05-07T12:34:51","date_gmt":"2008-05-07T18:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/?p=154"},"modified":"2008-05-07T12:34:51","modified_gmt":"2008-05-07T18:34:51","slug":"making-an-instructional-game-as-inviting-and-addicting-to-play-as-wow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/making-an-instructional-game-as-inviting-and-addicting-to-play-as-wow\/","title":{"rendered":"Making an Instructional Game as Inviting and Addicting to Play as W.O.W."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ask my studnets, &#8220;How can I make an instructional game that will teach you networking concepts as inviting and addicting to play as W.O.W.?&#8221;\u00a0 The response I received was, &#8220;Well, I don&#8217;t know, maybe\u00a0 you could come up with something like a Super Mario game,&#8221; replied one student.\u00a0 When I probed, he indicated that you could create a 2D game with differing levels.\u00a0 I asked him if it would be as engaging as W.O.W.\u00a0 He smiled and said, &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With that encounter, and other similar ones; I have decided to explore W.O.W. this summer to see first hand what makes it so engaging that people lose all sense of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I already know some of the things that I will need to incorporate into my &#8220;serious games;&#8221; here are some of my findings (which go right along with all of the literature I have been reading through my Games and Simulations class):<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Leveled play &#8212; needs to be missions\/assignments that are challenging enough to obtain a sense of accomplishment once they are completed, yet not too difficult as to disinterest.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Collaboration &#8211; methods for sharing resources and talents to meet the intermediate or final goal.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Society Structure &#8211; have different roles that allow players to interact with each other based upon that role<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Appealing graphics and modes of interaction &#8212; I am hoping Second Life will provide this.<\/p>\n<p>Second Life appeals to me as a medium to use because of #2-#4 above.\u00a0 It does not have a &#8220;Leveled-play,&#8221; but I am hoping that it can somehow be scripted.\u00a0 What I really like about Second Life is the ability to create &#8212; if a learner finds an activity &#8220;lame,&#8221; they could simply create a better activity.\u00a0 That would make for some very powerful learning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I ask my studnets, &#8220;How can I make an instructional game that will teach you networking concepts as inviting and addicting to play as W.O.W.?&#8221;\u00a0 The response I received was, &#8220;Well, I don&#8217;t know, maybe\u00a0 you could come up with something like a Super Mario game,&#8221; replied one student.\u00a0 When I probed, he indicated that&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[24,20,11],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=154"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/154\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=154"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=154"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.perceptivepetal.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=154"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
